Received by the Ontario Hop Growers’ Association on June 1, 2022
Dear hops industry stakeholders,
Should your organization or member organizations wish to export hops to European Union countries, please note that Agriculture and Agrifood Canada has completed negotiations with the European Commission to update a European regulation annex which will enable Canadian hops to receive the attestation of equivalence required by the Commission for import into the EU.
Annex I of Regulation (EC) No 1295/2008 has been amended to include the Pacific Agricultural Society (PACS) as the agency authorised to provide attestations of equivalence in Canada for exporting hops or hops products to European Union countries.
?Preamble (6) of Regulation (EC) No 1295/2008 indicates that it is the responsibility of third countries, such as Canada, to keep up to date the information contained in Annex I, ie: agencies authorized to provide ‘attestations of equivalence’ for those exporting hops to the European Union. These attestations of equivalence certify that a particular shipment adheres to the rules on hops and hop products applicable to the European Community (as laid out in Commission Regulation No 1850/2006).
Annex 1 of the Regulation has been outdated for a number of years and no agency had been providing the required attestations in Canada. Agriculture and Agri-food Canada officials have recently worked with counterparts at the European Commission and an amendment to the Regulation has entered into force.
Should your organization or member organizations wish to export hops to European Union countries, PACS can now be contacted to obtain the necessary attestation of equivalence.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
